My name is Tyler McCarthy and I have been cooking for over 15 years, which I absolutely love.
My career began at Bhima’s Warung in Waterloo where I was hired as a dishwasher at the ripe age of 15. Over my 2 year span, I worked my way up to the line working the apps and desserts. Still to this day it was one of the toughest jobs I’ve had.
By the time I graduated high school I was ready to see what the world had to offer. One of my close friends from school moved out to Calgary and told me of a little mountain town called Banff in Alberta that I had to see. Less then two months after graduating High school, I landed a cooking position at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel and from there my culinary career took off as I was exposed to cooking at the highest level.
Over the next 5 years I had the opportunity to work in Killarney, Ireland at The Glen Eagles hotel and several other hotels/restaurants in Ontario. In 2003 when Vancouver was granted the winter Olympics, I decided that was the place where I would go to school and study culinary arts. I lived in Vancouver for over 6 years and completed my Red Seal designation and had the pleasure of working at The Pan Pacific Hotel and several other well established food operations in The City of Vancouver.
During this time, I was introduced to retirement home cooking after a co-worker advised me to explore that option. I soon released that the demand for chefs in this field was bountiful After moving back home to Waterloo in July 2010, I have had the pleasure of working as The food and Beverage Manager for The Terrace on the Square, a Chartwell select retirement home. Along with continuing to expand my cooking knowledge, I am also focusing on the management side of food service which has been a huge learning curve for me. I am excited to see where my career will take me next as I strive to explore all aspects of the hospitality industry.
